As we all do our part by staying home, many of us are looking for ways to make our homes a cozier nest. A space where we find comfort, a sense of ease and simplicity. We’re with you on this! We wanted to find a way to create the laid back, island vibe of Pelee Island that we love in our own spaces, so we called in some experts.
The Hosts with the Most
Meet Pelee Island InnKeeps, Kevin and Cathy Miller of The Wandering Dog. Kevin and Cathy have been coming to their Pelee Island cottage since 2009 and Cathy is a Founding Member of The Island Unplugged Music Festival. They purchased the inn property in 2017 and dubbed it “The Wandering Dog Inn” in honour of Fred. Fred, is their sweet pooch who quickly makes friends with every human and dog he comes across during his hours wandering the beaches of Pelee Island.
The Back Story
The Wandering Dog Inn on Pelee Island has a rich history dating back to the 1800s where it was originally established as the “Ohio Pelee Club” and stood on Stone Road, just around the corner from its present location. In 1905 the house was relocated to where it stands today. While there have been many owners and names for the property, one thing has remained constant… its charm and status as a well-beloved stopping spot for travellers.
Island Vibes
So how do we get that charmed Wandering Dog island time feeling at home?
“We focus on making your room feel the way it did when you were a kid. Think of all of those things that brought you comfort,” says Cathy on recreating that inn vibe in your own bedroom. “Thin, crisp white sheets (nice on sunburns), ceiling fans, light breathable quilts and clocks that tick.”
Keeping it Sustainable
For your bathroom, go for thick, soft towels and soft bath mats. And of course – biodegradable all natural soaps + shampoos.
“Sustainability is top of mind for us and being on an island, this hits home even more,” stated Kevin. “We see directly the effects both positive and negative choices have on our environment.”
Local Flare
The Inn is also known for its eclectic decor mix of historical pieces, quirky finds and local art.
“Each one of a kind, hand made mug, wall hanging or sign created by local artists was made with the same amount of love we put into the Inn and that is meaningful to us,” shared Cathy.
Oh the Cake!!!
“But for any space to be complete, it must connect with each one of the senses,” insists Cathy. To ensure that happens, they offer Ma Kelley’s Coffee Cake in the breakfast line up for to their guests. Don’t worry, they were kind enough to share the recipe (see below).
It’s the small things that can make a big difference. That’s the basic lesson behind setting yourself and your home to island time. Feel, hear, listen, smell and taste. Slow down and savour.
Cheers!
