Hallowine Halloween Hooplah! The combination of candy, costumes and community create a fabulous reason to celebrate. Add the winding down of the colourful portion of the fall season and it’s a perfect formula for fun.
A unique opportunity during this time of year is to have small, sample-size offerings of many different types of sweets which lends itself to trying them all. Here are our suggestions for some not so scary Hallowine + Halloween pairings.
Not So Scary Pairings
Don’t worry, we won’t ask you to admit that you test your kids Halloween haul. We’ll simply offer up some of our favourite pairings just in case.
The Chocolates
Snickers Bars – this is the one that can stand up to a big, bold red wine. The combination of textures of caramel, nuts and nougat are united further when sipped with Cottage Series Shiraz Cabernet.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – Taking its cue from the well-known peanut butter and jelly combo, we suggest pairing LOLA Nero Red Sparkling VQA or Graffiti Cabernet Sauvignon for a treat that is both smooth and deep in flavour.
Kit Kat – Feeling like a connoisseur? The delicate layers of wafer wrapped in chocolate are pronounced when pairing with Pinot Noir Reserve VQA .
Candy Classics
Candy Corn – you love it. Or you don’t. Dating back to 1880 and its invention by the Wunderlee Candy Company, when candy corn hits store shelves, it’s a sure sign of fall and Halloween. The mellow creaminess, mixed with the sweetness of this time honored sweet pairs with the local Braeburn apple base of either Mousseux de Pomme and Hopping Apple Sparkling.
Licorice – The root of this plant is where licorice candy gets its bold flavour. If you’re all about the red variety, the Gamay in Ruggles Run Gamay Zweigelt VQA will play well with the strawberry notes in the candy. If it’s black licorice that you fancy, Secco VQA is the sophisticated choice.
SweeTARTS – the one that we seem to frown upon yet can’t stop snacking on. These crunchy candies make for a flavourful Hallowine tasting when paired with Lighthouse Riesling VQA. The fruitless of the candy and the high acidity of the wine play off each other with every crunch and sip.
Potato Chips
Those little, bite-size bags make for the perfect wine pairing experience. May we suggest:
Plain Classic – Bella Sparkling Pinot Noir Rosé VQA
BBQ – Pinot Noir VQA
Sour Cream & Onion – LOLA Chardonnay VQA
Salt & Vinegar – Pinot Grigio VQA
